Fractured, Chipped & Cracked Tooth

Decay and large filling cause a weakening in the remaining tooth structure over time. A hairline fracture often develops at the bottom corner of the filling. The molar and premolar teeth are most commonly affected. Grinding your teeth will cause a large increase in the stress and strain on your premolar and molar teeth increasing the risk of this condition. The reason it hurts to bite when you have a cracked tooth is that your tooth is flexing, which stimulates the nerve in the tooth. These hairline (microscopic) cracks open and close causing fluid to move inside the tiny tubules that make up the dentin of the tooth causing pressure on the tooth’s pulp (nerve) resulting in pain. The pulp in the cracked tooth may also be exposed to bacteria and their toxins become inflamed making it sensitive. If the crack goes untreated it can spread and deepen and a part of tooth may break off causing a need for root canal therapy or extraction.

Filling The Gap

The Implant – A new artificial tooth can be attached to an implant. This can be an excellent way of replacing a missing tooth or teeth, because other teeth are not involved. An implant is like an artificial tooth root, and is placed into the jaw bone where a tooth has been lost. One or more implants can be used, depending on the size of the space. After a time of healing (usually a few months) an artificial tooth is attached to the implant. Treatment takes between three to six months to complete. Not everyone has the right jaw structure for this treatment, and you will need to be checked by your dentist to see if an implant is the right option for you.

The Bridge – A bridge is an artificial tooth supported by the teeth on either side of the space. Your dentist prepares your teeth on either side of the gap, and takes a mold which is sent to a dental technician. The dental technician makes the complete structure, using porcelain (for appearance) and a metal core (for strength). Your dentist then places the bridge into your mouth. Bonded bridges that do not require shaping of the neighboring teeth are sometimes used. Stronger materials are sometimes necessary for bridges used in back teeth. Your dentist may use an all-metal bridge for this. A bridges is a long term, very attractive way of helping you fill the gap.

The Denture – There are several types of dentures suitable as a short or medium term tooth replacement. The plastic partial denture fits in the gum and sometimes has wire clasps to hold it in place. The metal precision partial denture fits exactly with cusps and rests in existing teeth. Both are removable and you take them out to clean.

Advanced Orthodontics (Invisalign)

The Hygienic benefits of Straighter Teeth Properly positioned teeth are easier to brush and floss than teeth that are crowded, crooked, or spaced too far apart. Properly aligned teeth can help gums fit more tightly around them, which may lead to better periodontal health. Maintaining a good oral hygiene, the chances of having plaque retention, or developing tooth decay, or periodontal (gum) disease can be reduced. Properly aligned teeth can be less stressful on the supporting bone jaw joints. Invisalign is the virtually invisible and hygienic alternative to braces that lets you ,keep smiling during your treatment. Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear removable aligners that gradually move teeth toward the smile you’ve always wanted. Invisalign is so discreet; most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.
